Active noise cancelling (ANC) quiets the hum of the metro and a plane. But not all headphones do it equally well.
What ANC is
Microphones listen to the noise around, and the headphones play the sound in antiphase. Low frequencies go best: engines, ventilation.
Battery life
With ANC on — 20 hours and more for over-ear models. Look for fast charging: 10 minutes for several hours of music.
Over-ear or earbuds
Over-ear models cancel better and play deeper bass, earbuds are lighter and fit a pocket.
At home a speaker is sometimes better than headphones: the Sone Wave fills a room and does not fear water.
